Temperatures will fall to -17 degrees celsius in parts of Germany this weekend, according to a forecast from the German Weather Service (DWD). Snow is expected from Sunday.

Freezing weather to persist in Germany

It’s not over yet. As Germany heads into the weekend, temperatures well below freezing and snowy weather are expected. According to a forecast from the DWD, eastern parts of Bavaria, Saxony and the Harz mountains will see temperatures drop to between -10 and -17 degrees celsius on Friday night.

Residents in most eastern federal states can expect nighttime temperatures between -5 and -9 degrees. In the west and southwest, weather conditions will be warmer, between 0 and -5 degrees. Across the country, light rain is expected to freeze and make roads very slippery.

On Saturday, it will remain cloudy and grey, with highs of 5 degrees expected in eastern states and highs of 8 degrees in the southwest.

Snow forecast from Sunday and Monday

Thanks to a storm which has been moving north from the Mediterranean, there is a chance of fresh snow from Sunday. According to wetter.com meteorologist Renate Molitor, Brandenburg, Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria will see the heaviest snow.

Moving into next week, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has forecast around 10 centimetres of fresh snow for the region between Leipzig and Hanover. Between 10 and 40 centimetres is forecast for the region between Nuremberg and Karlsbad.
