Autumn is here, and winter is upon us in Germany. How rainy, chilly, frosty and snowy can we expect it to be over the coming months? Forecasters are making their first predictions.

First forecasts made for winter weather in Germany

Meteorologists typically issue detailed weather forecasts for the coming five to 10 days, and five-day forecasts are about 90 percent accurate. However, they are also able to issue long-range weather forecasts.

Long-range forecasts can’t predict the weather, but can tell us what general trend to expect. These predictions are based on the frequency of weather anomalies, i.e., how often the weather will deviate from typical seasonal conditions. It is usually possible to make the first long-range winter weather forecasts in October.

The weather in Germany is expected to be sunny and mild in the coming weeks. Temperatures will only drop to single figures in November, when wetter weather is expected. Wetter.de is predicting a particularly icy start to December and February.

Will it snow in Germany this winter?

The weather has been in a La Niña phase in 2025. La Niña is a natural climate phenomenon during which east-to-west winds push warmer waters to the west. This means that cold weather and snow are more likely in Scandinavia, northern Germany and Poland.

According to RTL, the first snow of the winter is expected to fall in the southern parts of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Saxony, Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia in mid-November. Most of the country will see its first snowflakes in mid-December.

Those in Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn and parts of western Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein will have to wait until early January to see the first snow of the winter. In Emden and the surrounding regions, snow is only likely to appear from mid-January.
