The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued weather warnings for Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony on Monday, July 21.
Stormy weather to hit Berlin on Monday
Residents in northeastern Germany should brace for stormy weather in the morning and afternoon of July 21. In certain regions, the DWD has forecast up to 100 litres of rainfall per square metre over a 12-hour period, winds reaching 80 kilometres per hour and hail.
A mixture of level two warnings for “significant weather” and level three warnings for “severe weather” have been issued for Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. A level three warning has been issued for Berlin.
The worst of the storm is expected to pass by Monday evening, but parts of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern could see rough weather into Tuesday. A flooding risk has also been issued for Brandenburg and Saxony.
Storm will also move across southwestern Germany
The stormy weather is arriving in Germany from Czechia. Southwestern states will also be affected, though the DWD has not issued a warning for these regions.
Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Saarland and Hesse will all see rainy, stormy weather this afternoon, with highs of 19 degrees celsius. A flooding risk has also been issued for Bavaria.
During a storm, Germany’s Federal Office for Population Protection and Catastrophe Help (BBK) advises closing all windows and doors, securing loose objects (e.g. bins or garden furniture), and avoiding areas where you may be hit by falling objects.
Seek shelter in a building if you are out and about when the storm hits, and park cars in garages when possible, away from large trees.
