The number of coronavirus hotspots in Germany continues to rise rapidly, with more than 100 municipalities across the country now being considered “high risk” areas. One district has even passed the seven-day incidence mark of 200 for the first time.
A quarter of German municipalities now “high risk” zones
One in every four municipalities in Germany is now considered a risk area for coronavirus, according to the latest figures from the Robert Koch Institute. The data shows that 127 out of 412 rural and urban districts across Germany have exceeded the warning value of 50 new infections per 100.000 inhabitants within a week; nearly 20 of them have even exceeded the 100-mark, and Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria has become the first to surpass 200.
In an area where the seven-day incidence passed the 50 threshold, new restrictions must come into force, including bans on travelling, contact restrictions and even curfews. Authorities have warned that, if the numbers don’t stabilise soon, further measures will become unavoidable.
On Saturday, Angela Merkel issued an urgent appeal to the population to stay home as much as possible, after public health authorities warned that the overload of cases was causing problems with the tracing of infection chains. According to a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the RKI is only successfully locating the origin of infection in less than 30 percent of cases.
